About us

Independent, and staying that way

Founded in 2004 above a chip shop on Beech Street. Fourteen people now, four offices, and no interest in selling to a corporate.

Marlowe was started by two people who had both left the same corporate agency within a month of each other, for the same reason: a target structure that rewarded listings rather than sales.

If you are paid for winning instructions, the incentive is to quote a price high enough to win them. The property then sits unsold, and three months later the vendor is talked down to what it was always worth — having lost the best months of the market.

How we do it instead

Our agents are not paid on listings won. They are paid on completions and on the percentage of asking price achieved, which means quoting accurately is in their interest as well as yours.

It costs us instructions. Vendors regularly go with the agent who quoted forty thousand higher, and a fair number of them come back four months later. We would rather that than the alternative.

What we will tell you

When we think a property is over-priced, when a survey finding is genuinely serious, and when the house you are excited about has a problem we would not personally take on. This occasionally loses us a sale on the day and gains us a client for twenty years.

What we promise

Four things, in writing

These are in every agency agreement we sign, because each one exists in response to something the industry does routinely.

Comparables with every valuation

You see the evidence behind the number, so you can judge it yourself.

No long tie-ins

Eight weeks, not twenty. If we are not performing you should be free to leave.

One agent, start to finish

The person who valued it markets it and handles the sale. No handovers.

Every showing accompanied

We do not hand keys to strangers, and we give you real feedback afterwards.

Come and test us on it

Request a valuation and ask for the comparables. That is the quickest way to tell whether an agent is being straight with you.
